Our History

The history of the Organization of Latin American Students is a little hazy. The oldest Latino organization on the University of Chicago dates back to 1989. It was then called HSA (Hispanic Student Association). The name was changed to H.A.C.E.R. (Hispanic Association for Cultural Expression and Recognition) in 1990 to reflect the need for our cultural expression and recognition on the University campus. In 2000, the name was changed to its present name–OLAS, the Organization of Latin American Students.
